Women's Track and Field Tops Host Aquinas by One Point for First Place at Indoor Meet

In a down-to-the-final event finish, the Hope College women's indoor track and field edged host Aquinas College for first place in a nine-team meet by one point on Friday in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Flying Dutch totaled 190 points while recording the top performances in six different events.

Mitchel Achien'g won two events. The senior from Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu School) led a group of four Hope finishers in the 200 meters in 27.23 seconds. Freshman Grace Behrens of Mishawaka, Indiana (Trinity School at Greenlawn) was runner-up by five one-hundredths of a second.

Achien'g won the triple jump with an effort of 10.94 meters. Senior Addyson Gerig of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) took second at 10.59 meters.

Seven Hope runners placed in the top eight in the 3,000 meters, including senior Rebecca Duran of Palatine, Illinois (Palatine) with a first-place run of 11:14.19. Senior Breanna VanLaan of Lowell, Michigan (Lowell) was runner-up at 11:25.65.

Junior Jacinda Cole of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) topped a group of five Hope 1-mile runners in the top six with a time of 5:25.85. Senior Sally Hansma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Jenison) was runner-up at 5:26.82.

Freshman Lilly Tripp of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (Birmingham Seaholm) clocked a winning 800-meter time of 2:27.43.

Hope's 4x400 relay of senior Nicole Kruithof of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian), senior Chelsea Miskelley of Holland, Michigan (Black River), Hansma and Behrens won with a time of 4:15.64.

Achien'g also placed second in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.37 seconds and in the long jump with a leap of 5.15 meters. She took third in the 60-meter run at 8.12 seconds.

Hope's next meet is Friday, February 14 at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.
