Women's Track and Field Posts Three First-Place Performances at GVSU

In the final meet before the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, three Hope College athletes won events at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up on Friday.

Distance runner Sarah Grimes, hurdler Mitchel Achien'g and triple jumper Addyson Gerig all were victories during the non-scoring meet in Allendale, Michigan.

Gerig took first in the triple jump with a leap of 10.35 meters (33 feet, 11 ½ inches). The senior from Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) also placed third in the high jump after clearing 1.56 meters (5-1 ¼).

Grimes won the 5,000 meters. The freshman from Plainwell, Michigan (Gull Lake HS) clocked a first-place time of 19:33.51.

Achien'g tied for first in the 60-meter dash. The senior from Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu School) recorded a time of 9.13 seconds that matched GVSU's Brittany Rainey. 

Achien'g came in second in the 200 meters with a run of 26.55 seconds. Freshman Amanda Lines of Naples, Florida (First Baptist Academy) was fourth at 26.92.

Sophomore Ellie Haan of McBain, MIchigan (Northern Michigan Christian) was runner-up in the triple jump at 9.55 meters (31-4).

Senior Nicole Kruithof of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian) finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.06.

Sophomore Jenna Breuker of Grand Rapids, MIchigan (Forest Hills Central) took fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.84 meters (45-5).

Lines placed fourth in the 60-meter dash at 8.27 seconds. Freshman Helen Dodge of Grosse Pointe, Michigan (G.P. South) was fifth at 8.38.

Hope's next meet is the Saturday, February 29 MIAA Championships at Trine University.
