Welcome to today's home opener for the Hope College volleyball team at DeVos Fieldhouse. This is the first of 12 regular-season home matches for coach Becky Schmidt's Flying Dutch this season on either the DeVette-Van Wieren or DeYoung Courts.
Hope is ranked seventh in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll. The Flying Dutch moved up 10 spots after posting a 4-0 record at last weekend's Mount Union Purple Raider Classic in Alliance, Ohio, including a 3-0 victory against No. 2-ranked Wittenberg (Ohio).
Hope welcomes today's opponent: Alma College. This is the 79th match all-time between the Flying Dutch and Scots. Hope leads the series 51-27.
Junior setter Sophia Hackett was named MIAA Specialst of the week on Tueday. It was the first league honor of her Flying Dutch career.
The Flying Dutch were picked second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association preseason coaches poll. Hope received one first-place vote and trailed only preseason favorite Calvin. Alma was fifth.
Becky Schmidt is in her 13th season at the helm of the Flying Dutch. She led Hope to a national championship in 2014 and owns a career record of 368-112, including a 330-79 mark with the Flying Dutch. As a player, Schmidt was a two-time MIAA MVP and All-American at Hope.
Tom Doherty has joined the Flying Dutch coaching staff as an assistant coach along with Jean Kegerreis. Doherty had been a student assistant for Becky Schmidt before graduating from Hope.
