Volleyball Digs Out Road MIAA Win Against Alma

The Hope College volleyball team dug itself out of potential trouble with nearly 100 digs in a four-set victory at Alma College on Friday.

Seniors Mallory Luke of Saline, Michigan (Saline HS) and Sophie Hackett of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) led five Flying Dutch players with double-digit kills during the 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16 victory against the Scots.

Hope finished with 97 digs — its second-highest total of the season — while rebounding from a home loss to Saint Mary's on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutch improved to 16-9 overall and 10-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. They remained one game up on third-place Albion College in the loss column.

Luke, pictured, topped Hope with 24 digs. Hackett added 22 digs along with 46 assists and seven kills.

Three Flying Dutch hitters reached double-digits in kills.

Junior Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) led Hope with 12 kills.

Senior Paige Baker of Encinitas, California (La Costa Canyon) and junior Vanessa Reynhout of Freeport, Michigan (Lakewood) chipped in 11 kills apiece.

The match was the first in two days for the Flying Dutch. They host Kalamazoo College for a 4 p.m. Senior Day match at DeVos Fieldhouse on Saturday.
