Volleyball Rises To No. 20 In American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Poll

The Hope College volleyball team served itself into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 with two victories against nationally ranked opponents last weekend.

The Flying Dutch rose to 20th in Tuesday's AVCA poll after being unranked in the preseason rankings.

Hope started the season with a 3-0 record by going undefeated at the two-day Transylvania University (Kentucky) tournament.

Coach Becky Schmidt's Flying Dutch completed its season-opening sweep with a 15-25, 29-27, 19-25, 27-25, 15-7 victory against 10th-ranked Washington St. Louis on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch also beat No. 25 Berry (Georgia) 26-24, 25-19, 25-14 on Saturday and host Transylvania 25-16, 28-26, 18-25, 25-15 on Saturday.

Hope was led by senior outside hitter Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) with 48 kills, junior Gabbi Vachon of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Jenison) with 37 digs, and sophomore Adair Cutler of East Lansing, Michigan (Lansing Christian) with 81 assists.

The Flying Dutch return to action this weekend when they host the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Preview Tournament on Friday-Saturday, September 7-8 at DeVos Fieldhouse.
