Women's Cross Country Finishes Fifth at GRCC Invitational

by Anna Mitchell '21

The Hope College women's cross country team had another outstanding meet on Saturday by placing fifth out of 14 teams at the Grand Rapids Community College Invitational.

This meet's finish was unique for the Flying Dutch because a pack of five of Hope's runners all finished within 14 seconds of each other. The women found strength in numbers on the hilly and tight course, and the "pack" mentality led to multiple personal best times.

Junior Breanna VanLaan of Lowell, Michigan (Lowell HS) led Hope by finishing 34th out of 124 runners with a time of 19:36.

Sophomore Jacinda Cole of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) placed 35th with a time of 19:41.1.

Senior Ellie Best of Portage, Michigan (Portage Central HS) came in 36th with a time of 19:41.6.

Freshman Sarah Cannon of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) finished in 41st with a time of 19:46.

Freshman Madelyn Marciniak of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego HS) placed 42nd with a time of 19:50.

Sophomore Lauryn Thompson of Traverse City, Michigan (Central HS) came in 45th with a time of 19:54.

Senior Kayla Gercak of Portage, Michigan (Portage Northern HS) placed 53rd with a time of 20:09.

Hope's next race is Saturday, September 29 at Greater Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky.
