Flying Dutch March Past Calvin 78-47 At DeVos Fieldhouse

Box Score

Maura McAfee

Maura McAfee's career-high 22 points and ninth double-double of the season helped the unbeaten and nationally ranked Hope College women's basketball team down Calvin College 78-47 on Saturday.

McAfee, a sophomore from Midland (Midland HS), grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while shooting 62.5 percent from the field (10-of-16). She also totaled four assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 29 minutes.

The Flying Dutch improved to 18-0 overall and 10-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Hope beat Calvin (12-6, 7-3 MIAA) for the 28th time in the past 38 games in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,977. Calvin leads the all-time series 66-43.

The Flying Dutch never trailed after scoring 12 of the game's first 14 points.

"We came in with a pretty good game plan to break their press, but even better than that was our defense," Hope coach Brian Morehouse said. "It's easier to press when you make a free throw or make a basket, but it's harder to press when you're not scoring. Our defense made us better at breaking their press.

"I thought we worked really hard the last two weeks on our defense and it really showed today. I was sticking to the game plan today and everyone was in the right place at the right time."

Freshman point guard Angelique Gaddy of Caledonia (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) scored 15 points for the Flying Dutch. She nearly matched her career-high 16 from an 88-81 win at Calvin on Nov. 26.

Senior guard Brittany Berry of Grand Rapids (Catholic Central) equaled her season-high with six of Hope's 20 assists. Berry also chipped in six points.

Junior forward Hannah Doell of Center Valley, Pa. (Southern Lehigh HS) added seven points for Hope, while senior guard Megan Kelley of Rockford (Rockford HS) and freshman forward Mandy Traversa of Winfield, Ill. (Wheaton North HS) each had six points.
