Men's Swim/Dive Starts Season at Nationally-Ranked Grand Valley State University

The Flying Dutchmen finished runner-up in six events.

Two Hope College men's swimmers posted a pair of runner-up times for the Hope College men's swimming and diving team during Saturday's meet at Grand Valley State University featuring nationally-ranked teams.

The Flying Dutchmen are ranked 16th in NCAA Division III. GVSU, which is ranked sixth in NCAA Division II, won the meet, 210-67.

Junior Conor East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington HS) finished second in both the 200-yard butterfly at 1 minute, 57.16 seconds and the 200 individual medley at 2:01.85.

Sophomore Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) clocked runner-up efforts in the 200 freestyle at 1:43.38 — just 0.22 of a second behind the winner — and the 500 freestyle at 4:54.03.

Junior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) placed second in the 100 butterfly at 53.04.

Catton and Halberg also led off Hope's runner-up 400 freestyle relay. They teamed with sophomore Alex Boersema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) and sophomore Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) for a swim of 3:13.84.

Hope's next meet is on Friday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. at the MIAA Relays hosted by Calvin University.
