Women's Basketball Rebounds, Rolls Past Carnegie Mellon

The Flying Dutch advanced to title game at Ohio Wesleyan tournament

The Christmas holiday both left the Hope College women's basketball team and its opponent waiting longer to rebound from their first losses of the season.

The Flying Dutch made more of their opportunity, earning an 85-66 against Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) to open Ohio Wesleyan University's Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope on Thursday in Delaware, Ohio.

"It was a perfectly-timed game. Both teams were hungry. We were going at it," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "I thought we played with more of a chip on our shoulder. I thought we did tough things at times. We're still learning. On one hand, we're veteran-heavy. On one hand, we're very young. This game created so many chances to learn. Hopefully, we'll be better for it tomorrow."

Hope (10-1 overall) advanced to face Otterbein University (Ohio) in the championship game on Friday, Dec. 30, at 3 p.m.

In Thursday's first game, Otterbein (6-4) defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 64-57, behind a team-high 16 points off the bench from senior guard Natalie Galaida.

Against Carnegie Mellon (8-2), the Flying Dutch overcame an early 4-0 deficit to race to a 25-14 first-quarter lead. Hope pulled ahead, 47-30, by halftime.

Senior forward Savannah Feenstra (Osceola, Indiana / Northwood HS) scored 11 of her 15 points during the first half.

Sophomore guard Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) buried all three of her 3-point attempts and netted nine of 10 points during the first half. The Flying Dutch finished the game with 12 3-pointers compared to Carnegie Mellon's two.

Senior guard Ella McKinney (Haslett, Michigan / Haslett) led the Flying Dutch with 22 points, including 14 after halftime.

Carnegie Mellon's Chintala Anisha topped all scorers with 26 points on 66.7 percent field goal shooting (12-of-18).
