Men's Golf Weathers Windy Round, Wins First MIAA Jamboree

Seth Almquist
Despite a windy afternoon, the Hope College men's golf team stayed on course to start MIAA play.

The Flying Dutchmen fired a team score of 302 on their home course of Wuskowhan Players Club to place first at the league's first jamboree this fall. There will be five more 18-hole events. The lowest cumulative total out of the eight teams earns the regular-season championship.

Hope finished five strokes ahead of runner-up Trine University and seven strokes ahead of third-place Calvin University. The next MIAA Jamboree is Saturday, Oct. 1, hosted by Alma College at Pine River Country Club.

Four scoring rounds between 74 and 77 propelled the Flying Dutchmen.

"I'm really pleased with our consistency once again. That's been one of our strengths so far this season," head coach Scott Lokers said. "It was a difficult day. The scores were a little higher than we've been, but it's always good to get out with a win."

Senior Seth Almquist (Minneapolis, Minnesota / Wayzata HS) led Hope by carding a 3-over-par 74 and tying for second place. He finished three shots behind the leader, Trine's Carter Schnipke.

Junior Will Robson (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) chipped in a 75 and tied for fifth place.

Freshman Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) shot a 76 and tied for eighth place.

Freshman Liam Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) finished with a 77 and tied for 11th.

Senior Jack Crawford (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) added a 79.

"I think the wind was the biggest challenge," Lokers said. "We had trouble making decisions about club selection, but everybody battled, came through and posted solid rounds. It rained toward the end, and that made it even more challenging. Thankfully, it wasn't super cold.

"The greens were really fast, too. That made it a challenge in the wind also."

Playing as individuals, sophomore Will Webb (Lake Forest, Illinois / Lake Forest) shot a 75 for the Flying Dutchmen.

Junior Logan DeWitt (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) recorded a 76.

Sophomore Jack Guerrera (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) had a 83.
