ACHA Hockey Rides Stingy Defense to Sweep of Michigan

The seventh-ranked Hope College ice hockey team skated to a satisfying sweep over the weekend.

The Flying Dutchmen defeated the University of Michigan's ACHA Division 3 team twice in a span of 24 hours.

In their previous meeting, the Wolverines edged Hope and denied the Flying Dutchmen's bid for a three-peat of ACHA national titles.

Hope is now 12-4 overall after victories of 2-1 on home ice on Friday and 4-0 on the road on Saturday.

On Friday at Griff's IceHouse West, sophomore center Jake Onstott (Zeeland, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) struck twice during the first period to give the Flying Dutchmen an early two-goal lead.

Onstott first scored at the 11-minute, 45-second mark off an assist off an assist from freshman right wing Brady Breit (Byron Center, Michigan / Bryon Center).

Less than six minutes later, Ontstott converted a power-play goal that ended up being the game-winner. Senior right wing Nolan Convertini (Muskegon, Michigan / and senior right Jake Adams (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) were credited with assists.

Junior goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) stopped 21 shots.

On Saturday, junior defenseman Nolan Holtrop scored twice and had an assist to lead the Flying Dutchmen.

The shutout was Hope's fourth of the season.

Schick stopped all 21 shots he faced.

The Flying Dutchmen also received goals from Adams and senior defenseman Luke McKinch (Plymouth, Wisconsin / Plymouth Comprehensive).

Hope's final game before Christmas break is Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. against Arizona State University at Griff's IceHouse West.
