Baseball Avenges Loss to Hanover (Ind.), Earns Split on the Day

The Hope College baseball team turned the tables on Hanover College (Ind.) in their rematch.

The Flying Dutchmen scored all of their runs between the fifth and seventh innings to earn a 5-3 victory on Saturday at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, after losing, 14-4, on Friday.

Hope (3-4 overall) also bounced back from a 5-1 loss to Millikin earlier in the day on Saturday.

Against Hanover, the Flying Dutchmen jumped on the board in the fifth inning when sophomore third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) cashed in with a sacrifice fly that scored freshman left fielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic).

In the sixth, Hope grabbed a 4-2 lead. Junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) delivered an RBI double that plated junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).

Freshman right fielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) then hit a two-run single to center that brought home Meeuwsen and senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).

DeMann added a third RBI in the seventh with a grounder that scored senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center).

Winning pitcher and fifth-year senior Shane Hykin (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) scattered eight hits and three runs over 7 ? innings to pick up the decision.

Senior reliever Jake Van Dam (Cranford, N.J. / Cranford) tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for his first career save.

VanDam retired two of the three batters when he entered in the eighth to strand two Hanover runners.

Against Millikin, the Flying Dutchmen were limited to three hits, including a second-inning RBI single to right from Collins that knocked in junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven).

Millikin answered with two runs in its half of the second for a 3-1 lead. Millikin finished with six hits.

Freshman reliever Ian Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) threw three innings of one-hit scoreless relief for the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope's next game is Friday, March 17, at 5 p.m. against Johns Hopkins University (Md.) in Auburndale, Florida. It is the first of six games during Hope's annual spring break trip.
