Baseball Beats Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Walk-Off Single in the 12th Inning

Dylan Kleinedler and Robbie Stuursma made sure the Hope College baseball team did not let another game slip away.

Kleinelder, a pinch-runner in the bottom of the 12th inning, stole a base and scored on Stuursma's two-out single to lift the Flying Dutchmen to a 10-9 victory against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Tuesday in Davenport, Florida.

Hope snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-7 overall.

The game went extra innings tied at 9-9 after the Flying Dutchmen committed a ninth-inning error that led to three unearned runs.

After the two teams traded a scoreless at-bats in the 10th and 11th, Hope reliever Trent Johnson retired three of the four batters he faced in the 12th and stranded a runner at second.

The Flying Dutchmen then capitalized in their half of the 12th.

Senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) reached on a fielding error. Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson) pinch-run for Bayn and stole second base to move into scoring positions.

Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) knocked in Kleinedler with a walk-off single one day after Hope lost to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 4-3, on a walk-off hit in the ninth.

Johnson (Midland, Michigan / Midland) tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season. He struck out two and allowed two hits.

The Flying Dutchmen broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Stuursma was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Hope a 6-5 lead in the sixth. Senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) followed with a sacrifice fly.

After Eau Claire got a run back in the top of the seventh, junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) tripled to right field to plate Regan and senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville).

Krizan went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and one run scored.

Sophomore third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan) also collected three hits.

Stuursma and Regan had two hits and two RBIs apiece.
