Baseball Drops Home Opener to Manchester

Owen Krizan's first homer of the season was not enough for the Hope College baseball team as the Flying Dutchmen lost their home opener to Manchester University (Ind.), 15-6, Tuesday.

Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning to spark a four-run rally. Three batters later, pinch-hitter Zach Lorentsen (Wheaton, Illinois / Wheaton North) smacked an RBI double.

Unfortunately for the Flying Dutchmen, Manchester already put up 13 runs on the board.

Manchester, which improved to 10-9 overall, chased Krizan, the starting pitcher, off the mound in the third before registering an out. The Spartans struck for four runs during the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

First baseman Harrison Pittsford followed up a two-run homer in the third with a two-run double in the fifth. Manchester tacked on six more runs in the sixth.

Eight Hope pitchers combined to yield 15 hits, walk 11 batters and hit three more.

The Flying Dutchmen finished with nine hits, including two apiece from junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and sophomore third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland).

Hope's next game is scheduled for Friday, March 31, at 4 p.m. at Alma College.

The single, nine-inning game is the first in a three-game series against the Scots. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Hope on Saturday, April 1, at 1 p.m.
