The Flying Dutch softball team bounced back against the Belles of Saint Mary's to earn the split in their first MIAA league matchup of the season on Monday.
Hope, now 1-1 in conference play and 15-9-1 overall, took the win in game two, 8-4, after falling to Saint Mary's 4-2 in game one.
In game two, Hope took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to senior Cayley Ebeling's (Shelby Township, Michigan / Utica HS) single and junior Grace Henry's (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) ground out RBI.
However, Saint Mary's tied the game at two with unanswered runs in the top of the third and fourth innings.
Hope regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with an Ebeling triple to right field and Henry reaching on an error to score Ebeling.
Hope pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on three singles and one double.
Junior Alaina Adams (Oak Creek, Wisconsin / St. Thomas More) earned the win to improve to 3-3 this season after through pitching four innings. Adams slung three strikeouts, and allowed just four hits.
Ebeling led the way for Hope with three hits and three RBIs, while junior Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser) had two hits and Henry contributed three RBIs.
Game one saw Saint Mary's take an early lead with one run in the bottom of the second inning, followed by two more runs in the bottom of the third. Hope answered back with one run in the top of the fifth inning and another in the top of the sixth inning, but Saint Mary's secured the win with one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Junior Peyton Benjamin (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) led Hope with three hits and one RBI, while sophomore Kyra Acker (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) contributed two hits.
Sophomore Grace Connelly (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) was in the circle for Hope in game two after pitching 1.3 innings with four hits and two strikeouts.
The Flying Dutch return to Wolters Stadium for their version of The Rivalry game as they host Calvin University in their second MIAA series of the season on Thursday, April 13, for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
