Baseball Drops Series Opener to Kalamazoo in 11 Innings

The Hope College baseball team belted a season-high 20 hits, including a grand slam for the second consecutive game, but lost to Kalamazoo College, 15-14 in extra innings, on Monday at Boeve Stadium.

Both teams overcame six-run deficits during a four-hour, seven-minute series opener that saw Kalamazoo push across the winning run in the top of the 11th without a hit.

Hope fell to 11-12 overall and 4-3 in MIAA play. Kalamazoo improved to 16-6 and 4-1 in league games. The Flying Dutchmen will play at Kalamazoo in the second game of their series on Wednesday, April 12, at 4 p.m.

In the top of the 11th, Kalamazoo's Cooper Mills reached base on a one-out error by shortstop Devin Meeuwsen and advanced to third on pitcher Trent Johnson's errant pickoff throw. Johnson struck out Liam Regan but threw a wild pitch to the next batter that allowed Mills to score.

First baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) was stranded at second in Hope's at-bat. Krizan reached base after a wild pitch on a strikeout and moved up to second on reliever Gabe Sokol's balk.

Sokol, Kalamazoo's seventh pitcher, retired the next three Hope batters to register the save.

The Flying Dutchmen fell behind 7-1 after a six-run Kalamazoo third.

Hope evened the score with a six-run fourth, capped by a grand slam from junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids). Stuursma went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Flying Dutchmen took their own six-run lead with five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

In the fifth, senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) smacked a two-run double, then scored on a two-run homer by senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville).

Kalamazoo rallied to take a 14-13 lead with a seven-run eighth that was punctuated by a go-ahead, two-out grand slam from Robert Newland off of reliever Branden Rosenfeld, Hope's second pitcher of the inning.

Kalamazoo finished with 14 hits and had 12 more runners reach base on seven hit batters and five walks by six Flying Dutchmen pitchers.

Hope loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth when Meeuwsen singled home Stuursma for his fourth hit and first RBI of the game.

During the play, senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) tried to score after an errant Kalamazoo throw home but was tagged out at home for the second out.

Reliever Chase Cummins (1-1) then struck out senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center)  to send the game into extra innings.
