Men's Tennis Edged by Kalamazoo in First-Place Showdown

The Hope College men's tennis team made a valiant run on unseating Kalamazoo College as MIAA champion on Saturday before falling 6-3.

The Flying Dutchmen won two of the three matches that went to three sets and were decided by tiebreakers.

Hope completed league play with a 5-1 record. Kalamazoo improved to 4-0 in MIAA matches and can clinch the No. 1 seed for the league tournament with a win at either Trine University or Calvin University next week.

In doubles, Hope's No. 3 pairing of junior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis HS) and junior John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) earned a point against Kalamazoo with an 8-7 (6) victory against Parker Forster and Louis Landreau.

The No. 2 doubles match also went three sets. Kalamazoo's Casey Johnson and Adnan Alousi edged Hope seniors Tyler Stafford (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Matt Henkel (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. Central), 8-7 (2).

Hope won matches at No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles.

Henkel outlasted Johnson at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.

Sophomore Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) topped Foster, 6-2, 6-0.

Hope (7-9 overall) returns to action on Tuesday, April 18, at 4 p.m. with an exhibition match at home against Olivet College.
