Baseball Falls to Albion in Series Opener

The Hope College baseball team dropped its series opener at Albion College, 7-4, on Thursday.

The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday, April 21, at 1 p.m. at Boeve Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen (14-15, 7-5 MIAA) remain in fourth place in the MIAA standings.

Hope scored all of its runs in the eighth inning after falling behind 7-0.

After Albion starting pitcher Cole Giesige exited following seven shutout innings, the Flying Dutchmen sent eight batters to the plate against two relief pitchers.

Junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) opened the scoring with an RBI double.

Back-to-back, one-out RBI singles from senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) and junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) followed.

Senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) then knocked in Bayn with a single. Hope stranded a batter at third to end the eighth as well as junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) in the ninth after he led off with a double.

Albion (7-22, 3-9 MIAA) totaled 11 hits, including seven against losing pitcher Shane Hykin (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) in 3 1/3 innings. Hykin suffered his first loss of the season and dropped to 4-1.

The Britons broke open the game with a three-run fourth — after unearned — that propelled them to a 6-0 lead.

Giesge (3-3) struck out 13 Hope batters and yielded only two hits in seven innings on the mound. The left-hander walked just two.
