The Hope College softball team soared to a Senior Day victory against Kalamazoo College, earning the sweep with scores of 1-0 and 6-3 on Saturday.
Hope improved to 6-4 in league play and 20-12-1 overall.
In game one, the Flying Dutch clinched a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning on junior Emily Martin's (Whitehall, Michigan / Whitehall HS) single to right field.
The hit scored freshman Kennedi Pochmara (Clinton Township, Michigan / Chippewa Valley) from second base, ending the game.
"Em has been fire all season, and if you ask any of her teammates, she brings all the energy, so to have somebody in that moment, I couldn't have trusted Em more to step in and bring her team through. She has the biggest heart for this team," said head coach Brittney Harvey.
Junior Peyton Benjamin (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) led the team with two hits.
Sophomore Grace Connelly (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) pitched a gem, going the distance and allowing only two hits, striking out seven batters with 111 total pitches thrown.
Senior Lexi Potapczak (Naperville, Illinois / Benet Academy), junior Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser), senior Haley Bennett (Livonia, Michigan / Benjamin Franklin), and freshman Mya Spisz (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford) each had a single hit in the win.
In game two, Hope jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on a Martin single and a Potapczak double.
Kalamazoo fought back, tying the game at two in the bottom of the first and taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second.
Hope rallied in the top of the third when senior Cayley Ebeling (Shelby Township, Michigan / Utica) singled to score junior Kyra Acker (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids), tying the game at three.
The Flying Dutch took the lead for good in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on an error, and a Bennett 2 RBI single.
Junior Samantha Vermeesch (Ithaca, Michigan / Ithaca) came in to pitch in relief in the second inning, allowing only two hits for her 10th win of the season.
Benjamin had a team-high three hits, while Potapczak and Ebeling each had two hits.
"To see this team come together as one team on Senior Day for those three [seniors] and get the win, is just awesome," said Harvey.
The Flying Dutch will play their final home game of the season on Thursday, April 27, at 3 p.m. as they host Trine University at Wolters Stadium.
