Avenged.
The women's tennis team has avenged its regular season loss and extended its league-record streak of MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament titles with a 5-3 win over Kalamazoo College on Friday.
The Flying Dutch have now won 11 consecutive MIAA Tournament titles.
With the win, Hope advances to next month's NCAA Division III Championships. The Orange and Blue move to 13-6 overall.
"I'd be lying if I said that this match wasn't a revenge match for us," said head coach Austin Hunt. "The girls have been extremely determined to get this title and all their work has finally paid off."
The hungry Flying Dutch squad started out with two of three doubles flights wins from No. 1 and 3 doubles pairings.
Senior Delanie Riebschleger (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) and junior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) grabbed Hope's first victory in the No. 3 doubles slot, 8-3, and the team of sophomore Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) and freshman Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) earned the second doubles win at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
Weeber then hung a dominant victory in the No. 3 singles slot with a 6-0 and 6-2 wins, while Moran gave Hope a 4-2 lead with her 7-5 and 6-2 wins at No. 2 singles.
Senior Taylor Truman (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) snagged her win at No. 6 singles to give Hope the title win over the Hornets.
"The coaches told the ladies that the team that would win the day would be the one that can have the highs and lows that come along with a championship match, but also the team that can bring it back to a level and steady pace for the duration of the evening. Our ladies did just that and had an incredible day."
