The Hope College men's tennis team entered the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament Championship match on the road against Kalamazoo, a familiar foe to Hope.
It was the fifth consecutive MIAA Tournament Championship match appearance for Hope, not counting 2020, when the league season and tournament were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Flying Dutchmen took two of three doubles matches from the top-seeded Hornets.
The strong start did not carry over into singles play for Hope as Kalamazoo won four of the six singles flights to complete the 5-3 win.
The Flying Dutchmen, who finished second to Kalamazoo in the MIAA standings with a 5-1 conference record, finished the season at 8-10.
Hope recorded flight victories at first and third doubles with seniors Jacob Burkett (Clarkston, Michigan / Clarkston HS) and Cameron Coates (Stevensville, Michigan / Laurel Springs) emerging victorious at No. 1 singles with a tiebreaker 8-7 (6) win.
At No. 3 doubles, juniors Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis) and John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) put up a strong performance, defeating their Hornets opponents 8-4.
Hope's lone singles flight win came from Fay at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-0.
