Baseball Drops Series Opener to Adrian

The Hope College baseball team outhit Adrian College Friday afternoon, but could not push a run across as the Bulldogs shut out the Flying Dutchmen 4-0 on Friday at Boeve Stadium.

The loss in the opening game of a three-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association weekend series dropped Hope to 2-2 in the MIAA and 9-11 overall.

The Flying Dutchmen, who recorded seven hits in the game to six for Adrian, had their opportunities in the early going, putting runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings. Their best opportunity came in the bottom of the third while trailing 1-0.

Sophomore left fielder Dylan Kleinedler of Sterling Heights, Michigan (Sterling Heights Stevenson) drilled a double to left to open the frame, then remained at second on an infield single by sophomore third baseman Al Money of Midland, Michigan (Midland), putting two runners on with no outs.

Kleinedler advanced to third on a flyout by fifth-year designated hitter Spencer Cable of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville), putting the Flying Dutchmen 90 feet from tying the game. But Adrian pitcher David Gutierrez got a double play to escape the jam.

The Bulldogs (3-2 MIAA, 11-12 overall) scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, then tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth to secure the win. Adrian took advantage of four Hope errors in the contest.

Senior lefthander Matt Plaehn of Okemos, Michigan (Lansing Catholic) pitched well in a losing cause for Hope, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out six over five innings. He fell to 0-4 for the season with the loss.

Junior righthander Reece Crabtree of Reynoldsburg, Ohio (Reynoldsburg) allowed two runs and three hits in three innings, but one of the runs was unearned.

The Flying Dutchmen got two hits apiece from junior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) and senior second baseman Nolan Gardner of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids).

Stuursma and Gardner each had a double in the game.

Gutierrez worked eight shutout innings for the win for Adrian, striking out eight and walking one while scattering six of Hope's seven hits.

The Flying Dutchmen head to Adrian on Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Nicolay Field.
