Softball Earns Split at Albion in Season-Finale

The Hope College softball team closed the 2023 season with a split of a doubleheader at Albion College on Saturday, winning 1-0 in Game 1 and losing 2-1 in eight innings in Game 2.

The Flying Dutch finished with a 21-17-1 overall record and a fifth-place 7-9 MIAA record.

In Game 1, junior third baseman Emily Martin (Whitehall, Michigan / Whitehall) snapped a scoreless tie with a third-inning single to center that scored junior shortstop Grace Henry (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville).

Martin and Henry recorded two hits apiece. Both Hope and Albion collected seven hits for the game.

Winning pitcher Grace Connelly (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) scattered five hits and two hit batters over five innings on the mound.

The sophomore righthander struck out three en route to closing the season with an 8-6 record.

Junior reliever Jennaka Bultman (Shawnee, Kansas / Shawnee Mission) recorded the final six outs for her first save of the season.

The right-hander struck out one while allowing two hits and one walk.

In Game 2, Hope forced extra innings with a one-out RBI double from Henry that knocked in senior second baseman Cayley Ebeling (Shelby Township, Michigan / Utica). Henry was stranded at second.

Albion (13-22, 5-11 MIAA) capitalized on a leadoff walk and a hit batter off reliever Alaina Adams (Oak Creek, Wisconsin / St. Thomas More) in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie with a Lauren Creon sacrifice fly.

Winning pitcher Ashley Pion retired three of the four Hope batters she faced in the bottom of the eight. Pion pitched all 15 innings on Saturday.
