Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Alan Babbitt

Resilient Women's Basketball Weathers Challenge from Alma in 2OT

To give its beloved coach a milestone victory, the Hope College women's basketball team worked overtime.

It took 50 minutes of work, including two five-minute overtime periods, but the nationally-ranked Flying Dutch earned a come-from-behind 79-77 victory against Alma College on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutch (15-1, 7-0 MIAA) are ranked fifth in this week's WBCA NCAA Division III and eighth in the D3hoops.com poll.

The victory was head coach Brian Morehouse's 700th in just 795 games. He broke collegiate and NCAA records for fastest basketball coach to 700 wins in any college division, women's or men's.

Mark Campbell of Union University (Tenn.) women's basketball previously held the collegiate record of 700 wins in 811 games, which included wins at the NCAA, NAIA and National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association levels.

Kim Mulkey of Louisiana State women's basketball previously held the NCAA record of 700 wins in 813 games.

The game was Hope's first in double-overtime since a 70-65 loss at Trine in the 2019 MIAA Tournament championship game.

There were 16 tie scores and 10 lead changes.

Hope overcame deficits of seven points four minutes into the second quarter and six at the end of the third quarter.

Sophomore guard Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian HS) said that she and her teammates remained together despite the team's struggles and Alma's exceptional effort.

"We just were all uptight in the first couple of quarters. I think at halftime we came together," Vis said. "We talked about how we needed to rebound more, box out more, and play together more. Even though it didn't show for an extra 2 ½ quarters, it did work for us to play together as a team.

"We talk about being the most connected team. I think it showed in the last two five-minute [periods] that we are connected."

During the fourth quarter, the Flying Dutch outscored Alma 20-14 to force overtime. Hope survived a game-winning 3-point attempt rattling off the rim as time expired.

In the first overtime, both teams scored eight points. The Flying Dutch missed a desperation 3 at the buzzer, leaving the score tied at 62.

In the second overtime, offense picked up as the teams combined for 32 points. Alma, seeking to end a 49-game losing streak in the series, rallied after falling behind by five points.

Freshman guard Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison HS) gave Hope a perilous 79-77 lead after hitting her second free-throw attempt with about 11 seconds remaining.

Given one last chance, Alma set up a game-winning 3-point attempt from the top of the key, but it hit off the front of the rim. Maynard snared the loose ball as the final buzzer sounded.

While praising his own team's resilience, Morehouse also credited the Scots and head coach Sami Stormont for their play.

"I think our kids were a little tight, and I think Alma played great. I think our kids were trying to win 700 instead of trying to play basketball, then, Alma plays way better than we do and you combine two things," Morehouse said. "I thought Coach Stormont coached a great game. Every time we thought we had a nail in the coffin, they stepped up, made another play, made another shot. We said at the beginning of the year we thought they were one of the best teams in the league, and I still believe that."

Vis scored a team-high 19 points and six rebounds, including 11 points during the second overtime. Her 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining in the second overtime gave the Flying Dutch the lead for good at 76-73.

Sophomore guard Karsen Karlblom (Crystal Lake, Illinois / Prairie Ridge) chipped in 12 points.

Senior center Raven Jemison (Kentwood, Michigan / East Kentwood) added nine points.

Junior guard Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H Dow) chipped in seven points and a team-best seven rebounds while playing a team-high 37 minutes.

Alma (7-9, 3-4) received a game-high 23 points from forward Taylor Sas while playing 43 minutes, and 20 points from guard Brooke LeRoux in 44 minutes. Guard Madison Robbinson added 13 points in a game-high 47 minutes.

The Scots attempted 42 3-pointers and made 11 of them. Hope finished 9-of-26 from 3-point range.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. at Adrian College.
