Hope College's annual Purple Community event will feature a women's and men's basketball doubleheader to benefit Van Andel Institute this week.

The Flying Dutch and Flying Dutchmen will host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at DeVos Fieldhouse. Tipoff is 6 p.m. for the women's game and 8 p.m. for the men's game.

Members of both Hope teams will don purple jerseys with tributes to loved ones and friends on the back. A limited number of Hope Basketball purple T-shirts will be sold through the Hope College Bookstore. There will be raffles, one of which is for a purple women's basketball jersey.

Donations will be accepted throughout Wednesday. Proceeds from the Purple Community event will go toward providing internships for Hope students at Van Andel Institute.

Van Andel Institute is an independent research facility devoted to improving human health through biomedical research and science education.

Purple Community is a dynamic community awareness and fundraising program for Van Andel Institute that connects individuals, schools, teams, companies and corporations that want to join the fight against cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, to the resources needed for action.
