Women's Basketball Edged in Overtime in Matchup of Nationally-Ranked Teams

In a game of nationally-ranked teams that had 11 lead changes and nine tie scores, the Hope College women's basketball team fell to Carroll University, 80-75, in overtime at DeVos Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

No. 21 Carroll, which outscored the Flying Dutch 13-8 during the five-minute extra period, moved to 4-1 on the season, while No. 12 Hope fell to 3-2.

Sophomore Chloe Brunsberg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian HS) finished with a career high 18 points to lead the Flying Dutch.

Brunsburg shot 66.7% from 3-point range (4-of-6), including one during the first quarter that helped spark Hope back from an early 15-6 hole. The Flying Dutch trailed, 21-20, after the first quarter following a layup at the buzzer from sophomore Terin Maynard (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison).

The Flying Dutch pulled as much as eight points in the second half. Carroll, however, ended regulation on an 8-2 run.

Both teams missed shots at the end of regulation to force overtime tied at 67-67.

The Flying Dutch surged ahead 73-70 early in overtime, but Carroll responded again and outscored Hope, 10-2, over the final two minutes.

"They're a really good team, they were top 12 in the nation last year. I think we got off to a bad start, but then we came back," said head coach Brian Morehouse. "We dug ourselves in a hole to start the game and then we came back and played really well going forward."

Freshman Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) chipped in 14 points off the bench to help Hope's bench outscore Carroll by a 58-12 margin.

Maynard added 10 points for Hope.

Senior Courtney Lee (Fishers, Indiana / Heritage Christian) brought down a team-high seven rebounds, while freshman Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) and Anna Richards each grabbed seven rebounds.

"Our bench came up huge today," said Morehouse. "I think everyone coming off of the bench today played really well."

Hope looks to rebound on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 6 p.m. against the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
