No. 17 Women's Basketball Defeats Albion to Open MIAA Title Repeat Quest

Over 11 days before Christmas, the Hope College women's basketball team aims to wrap up a 3-0 start to its quest for an MIAA title repeat.

The 17th-ranked Flying Dutch took the first step on Wednesday by defeating Albion College, 71-52, in the league opener at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Hope (6-2 overall) led for all but the first 1 ½ minutes of the game and extended its winning streak to a season-best three games.

"It was great to get off to a great start in the league," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "We get three games in the league before Christmas, and you've got to make the most of them. They're just as important as the game you play on Feb. 14."

Junior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian HS) scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

The 5-10 Vis shot a season-high 75% from the field (6-8).

Sophomore Chloe Brunsberg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian) and freshman Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) chipped in 10 points apiece for the Flying Dutch.

Senior Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) and freshman Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) added eight points apiece.

Hope buried clutch shots at the end of the first three quarters.

It was a Richards 3 in the first quarter for a 24-15 lead.

Brunsberg followed with a clutch 3 at the end of the second quarter for a 43-23 halftime lead.

Senior Courtney Lee (Fishers, Indiana / Heritage Christian) made a layup in the closing seconds of the third quarter for a 62-37 lead.

Albion (1-5, 0-1 MIAA) received a team-best 10 points from Khaleeya Cook off the bench.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. at The University of Olivet.
