Men's Tennis Edged by Lake Forest

The Hope College men's tennis team went down to the wire before falling at Lake Forest College (Ill.) by a 5-4 margin on Friday near Chicago.

Lake Forest claimed a pair of three-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles that proved to be the difference.

A good start at doubles showed promise for the Flying Dutchmen (2-5).

At second doubles, freshmen Paul Schneider (Fischers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern HS) and Rylan Doden (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) won the first match of the day, 8-5.

Hope also won at third doubles, as freshman Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Rochester Adams) and junior Jonathan Eggleston (Yuseong Gu, Daejeon / Taejon Christian International School) took another 8-5 victory.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis) and junior Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) dropped their match, 8-5.

In singles play, Becksvoort won a hard-fought match, 6-2, 3-6, (10-6), at No. 5 singles.

Eggleston triumphed at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2, in his second singles match this season.

At No. 3 singles, freshman Rylan Doden (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) was edged 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-2.

At No. 4 singles, Nugent dropped a tough three-setter 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Fay lost at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4. Schneider fell at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4.

The Flying Dutchmen now look ahead to the spring break trip in Orlando, Fla.

Hope's next match will be Tuesday, March 12, against Bethel University (Minn.) at the USTA National Training Center.
