Softball Closes Spring Break Trip with Split, Ends Trip with 9-1 Record

The Hope College softball team returns north after concluding a successful week in Clermont, Florida.

The Flying Dutch finished their spring break trip on Friday with a 9-1 record since Saturday and improved to 11-6 overall.

Hope nearly went unbeaten over spring break, but a seventh-inning rally from Case Western Reserve University handed the Flying Dutch a 6-5 loss in the first game on Friday. Hope rebounded to hold off Hood College (Md.) for a 5-3 victory later in the afternoon.

Against Hood, the Flying Dutch trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third but quickly evened the score.

Sophomore Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian HS) started the offense off with a bunt single to the pitcher which allowed senior Grace Henry (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) to score.

DeMann's single got senior Peyton Benjamin to third base. Benjamin (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) proceeded to steal home.

In the fifth, Hope erupted for three wins after DeMann led off with a walk.

Freshman Eliana Ruhrup (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) singled to get DeMann to third base, and DeMann successfully stole home for the go-ahead run.

Ruhrup came home on a single from senior Jennaka Bultman (Shawnee, Kansas / Shawnee Mission). A sacrifice fly from senior Kyra Acker (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) sent in freshman Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) for the Flying Dutch's final run.

Hood rallied in its last at-bat, scoring one run and bringing the tying run to the plate.

Senior Alaina Adams (Oak Creek, Wisconsin / St. Thomas More) closed the door and capped a three-inning effort for the save.

Starting pitcher Grace Connelly (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) earned the win in the circle after allowing two runs in four innings of work.

Against Case Western Reserve, Hope jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a five-run third inning.

Stironek and Bultman each soared hits to the outfield, driving in two RBIs apiece to give Hope the lead.

Case Western also utilized a five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans sent eight batters to the plate and delivered five hits, including a two-out, walk-off single from Karen Potts.

Senior Samantha Vermeesch (Ithaca, Michigan / Ithaca) went the distance and struck out five.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, March 23, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Ohio Northern University.
