Women's Tennis Serves up Win at Alma in MIAA Opener


The Hope College women's tennis team traveled to Alma College on Thursday and successfully commenced MIAA play.

The Flying Dutch swept their foe, 9-0, and improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in league matches.

To open the match, Hope secured all three doubles lines for the eighth time this season.

At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) won 8-5.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and Junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) rolled to an 8-1 victory.

At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) won 8-4.

The  Flying Dutch did not let off the gas in singles with six straight-set victories.

Lopykinski only dropped a single game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.

Moran served up a No. 2 singles victory of 6-3, 6-1.

Weeber stymied her Scot opponent at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Coffey dished out a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

Sophomore Hope Rhoades (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) brought home a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.

Freshman Makenna Crandell (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) won her first match of the season with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.

Hope's next match is another one on the road on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Albion College.
