Baseball Earns Split at Millikin with Four-Run Game 1 Rally

Senior second baseman Nolan Gardner delivered a go-ahead, two-run single to spark the Hope College baseball team to a 5-1 victory at Millikin University (Ill.) on Saturday in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

Millikin edged the Flying Dutchmen, 5-4, in Game 2 on a ninth-inning, walk off single from Kyle Gibson and took the weekend, three-game series. The Big Blue took Friday's opener, 11-8.

Hope (6-9 overall) is scheduled to play next on Wednesday, March 26, at 4 p.m. with a single game at Manchester University (Ind.).

In Game 1, the Flying Dutchmen answered a Tommy Shaw sixth-inning solo homer with a four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning.

Hope sent eight batters to the plate. Sophomore leftfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic HS) knocked in senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) with a sacrifice fly.

Two batters later, Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) smacked a one-out single that scored senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton).

Junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) capped the rally with a sacrifice fly that brought home sophomore rightfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian).

Money added a ninth-inning RBI single that scored pinch-runner Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson).

Winning pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) pitched 7.1 innings to raise his record to 3-1. The right-hander struck out three, did not walk a batter and allowed nine hits.

Reliever Ian Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) squashed an eighth-inning Millikin threat and earned his first save by recording the game's final five outs.

In Game 2, Millikin's Andy Niebrugge tripled to lead off the ninth and came home three batters later on a Gibson single with nobody out off freshman reliever Thomas Bacigalupo (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow).

Hope tied the score in the eighth when senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) doubled and later scored on a Collins sacrifice fly.

Earlier, Krizan gave the Flying Dutchmen a 1-0 lead on a first-inning sacrifice fly that brought home senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and a 2-1 lead on a third-inning homer. It was Krizan's first home run of the season.

Hope took a 3-2 lead on a sixth-inning RBI double from sophomore rightfielder Charlie Saul (Batavia. Illinois / Batavia) that scored Seabaugh.
