The Hope College men's tennis team fell to Trine University, 6-3, on the road on Tuesday.
The Flying Dutchmen earned points at first doubles, fourth singles and fifth singles.
Hope fell to 7-8 on the season and 1-1 in MIAA play. The Thunder improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 against MIAA opponents after their first victory in the series since 2015.
The Flying Dutchmen fell behind early after Trine won two of the three doubles matches.
Senior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis HS) and junior Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) picked up Hope's doubles victory, winning 8-4 at the top flight.
At second doubles, senior John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) and freshman Rylan Doden (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) fell 8-3.
A third doubles dogfight saw freshmen Paul Schneider (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) and Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) defeated by a score of 8-6.
Hope was unable to rack up the four singles wins needed for victory in large part because of Trine's strong play at the top three flights.
At the top flight, Fay was bested 6-2, 6-3, by Trine's freshman Sammy Yin.
Schneider suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at second singles.
Doden lost 6-2, 6-4, 4-6 at third singles.
The Flying Dutch Dutchmen were able to pick up wins at fourth and fifth singles behind the strong play of Nugent and Becksvoort, who won 6-1, 6-4, and 6-4, 6-2, respectively.
Voss fell at the sixth singles 6-2, 6-1.
Hope returns to action on Wednesday, April 3, at home at 4 p.m. against Adrian College.
