The second-ranked Hope College ice hockey team was edged by No. 10 Calvin University, 4-3, on Friday during the ACHA Division 3 national championships in St. Louis, Mo.

Calvin clinched a berth in next week's national semifinals with the pool-play victory and denied the Flying Dutchmen's bid for a fourth consecutive trip to the national semifinals.

Hope (26-6) concludes the 2024 season on Saturday, March 9, at 8:45 p.m. Central with a final pool-play game against Dartmouth College.

On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen rallied from a 3-1 deficit four minutes into the second period by scoring twice in five minutes.

Junior defenseman Ian MacDonald (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) cut the deficit to 3-2 with a power-play goal at the 7:44 mark of the second period.

Junior defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills) tied the score at the 12:47 mark thanks to an assist from junior defenseman Casen Faustyn (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos).

Hope drew a Calvin penalty before the goal but could not convert on the power play.

Calvin converted a Flying Dutchmen penalty for too-many-men on the ice for a go-ahead goal from Chris Benelos at the 18:32 mark.

Hope went on the only power play during the third period but did not score.

The Flying Dutchmen were outshot by a 41-33 margin.
