Men's Tennis Drops Showdown at Calvin

The Hope College men's tennis team dropped a showdown at Calvin University, 6-3, on Saturday in Grand Rapids.

The loss snapped an eight-match winning streak in the series for the Flying Dutchmen.

The Orange and Blue slipped to 9-9 overall and into fourth place in the MIAA standings with a 3-2 league record. Calvin (12-2, 4-0 MIAA) shares the league lead with Trine University.

On Saturday, Hope faced a surge of difficult doubles play to open the match.

At first doubles, senior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis HS) and junior Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) were defeated 8-4.

At second doubles, freshman Rylan Doden (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) and senior John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) lost 8-0.

Third doubles brought a glimmer of hope as freshmen Paul Schnider (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) and Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) duked out an intense 8-7 (11-9) victory.

Calvin sealed the win in singles play, despite the Flying Dutchmen earning points at second and fifth singles.

At the second flight, Schneider rallied from his thrilling doubles match to emerge victorious in an equally thrilling singles match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

At the fifth flight, Becksvoort rolled 6-1, 6-2, taking a seventh consecutive straight-set victory.

At first singles, Fay fell to Calvin freshman Marquis Willingham at first singles by a score of 6-4. 6-0.

At third singles, Doden dropped a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 match.

At fourth singles, Nugent saw a comeback fall short in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 defeat.

At sixth singles, Voss fell 6-0, 6-1.

The Flying Dutchmen will host third-place Kalamazoo College in their next match on Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m.
