Baseball Scores 12 Unanswered Runs, Beats Grace Christian

Elliott Peter's eighth-inning grand slam provided a crushing blow for the Hope College baseball team against non-league foe Grace Christian University.

A few moments later, the freshman shortstop's nimble fielding finalized a 12-4, come-from-behind victory on Tuesday at Boeve Baseball Stadium.

Running to his left, Peter (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville HS) corralled a grounder after it caromed off second base, stepped on the bag and fired to first baseman Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) for a game-ending double play.

Hope (19-13 overall) scored 12 unanswered runs against an improved Grace Christian — all after the fifth inning.

The Tigers, who already have surpassed their win total from the program's first two collegiate seasons combined, jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

Grace Christian (16-28) kept the Flying Dutchmen, who rested their starters, scoreless until sophomore second baseman Logan McCoy (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) scored in the sixth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Freshman third baseman Cooper Johnson (Allen Park, Michigan / Allen Park) sparked a four-run rally by smacking a two-run double and later scoring on a wild pitch.

Peter scored the go-ahead run on Seabaugh's seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Peter blasted his first Hope homer over the center-field fence with the bases loaded to fuel a seven-run rally.

Johnson closed the scoring with an RBI single — his team-leading third hit of the game.

Hope outhit Grace Christian by a 13-7 margin.

McCoy, Peter and center fielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) finished with two hits apiece.

The Flying Dutchmen threw eight pitchers, including a winning reliever Nic Bender (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia). The sophomore right-hander fired a scoreless seventh after Hope grabbed its first lead. It was Bender's first collegiate victory.

Hope is scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 26, at 4 p.m. with a single game at Adrian College.

The Flying Dutchmen, who hold a one-game lead in the MIAA standings, are to host Adrian for a series-ending doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m. It is Senior Day.
