Baseball Edged in Pitcher's Duel at Alma

The Hope College baseball team fell, 2-1, at Alma College on Friday in a pitcher's duel during the opener of a three-game series with the Scots.

The Flying Dutchmen (9-11 overall) slipped into a three-way tie for second place in the MIAA standings with Adrian College and Calvin University. All three teams are 3-1 in league play and trail 4-0 Kalamazoo College.

Junior pitcher Trent Johnson (Midland, Michigan / Midland HS) took the loss despite allowing only four hits and two earned runs over 6.2 innings.

Johnson (2-3) struck out two and walked three.

Hope outhit Alma by a 7-4 margin but left six runners on base to the Scots' four.

The Flying Dutchmen tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) scored on senior second baseman Nolan Gardner's popout to shallow right.

Alma (12-9, 2-1 MIAA) went back ahead in the bottom of the sixth on Colin Czalkowski's two-out RBI double to center.

Winning pitcher Tyler Johnson (3-0) scattered six hits and one run over seven innings of work for the Scots.

Reliever Hayden Hileman retired six of the seven Hope batters he faced to record his third save.

The series concludes on Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Boeve Stadium.
