The Hope College softball team's MIAA Tournament championship appearance was in sight, but a familiar opponent fizzled out the opportunity on Saturday.
The Flying Dutch faced off with Calvin University for the fourth time in eight days, with a chance to move on to the MIAA Tournament championship.
The Knights had taken all three games from Hope this season by just one run.
This time Calvin struck three times, and kept Hope off the scoreboard, while the MIAA Most Valuable Pitcher, Brooke Hunderman, held Hope to just two total hits in seven innings.
Losing pitcher Grace Connelly (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville HS) worked through 3.2 innings, allowing just five hits and sending six packing via strikeout.
Senior Peyton Benjamin (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) picked up her third consecutive game with a hit.
Freshman Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) collected Hope's other hit against Calvin.
The game marked the finale for eight seniors: Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser), Grace Henry (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville), Alaina Adams (Oak Creek, Wisconsin / St. Thomas More), Kyra Acker (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids), Samantha Vermeesch (Ithaca, Michigan / Ithaca), Jennaka Bultman (Shawnee, Kansas / Shawnee Mission), Emily Martin (Whitehall, Michigan / Whitehall) and Benjamin.
The senior class went 98-56-1 over the past four seasons with one MIAA regular-season championship.
