Softball Plays 20 Innings, Edged Twice by Calvin

The Hope College softball team finished the regular season with a pair of one-run losses at Calvin University on Friday but is looking forward to returning to the MIAA Tournament.

The Flying Dutch lost 2-1 in seven innings and 2-1 in 13 innings in the regular-season finale.

Hope (25-14 overall) qualified for the MIAA Tournament after missing out last season. With an 11-5 league record, the Flying Dutch could be either a third- or fourth-seed for next week's MIAA Tournament, depending on the results from Adrian College's doubleheader vs. Kalamazoo College on Saturday, May 4. One Kalamazoo victory would secure a third seed for Hope.

In game one against Calvin, Hope took the lead midway through during the top of fifth inning when senior Grace Henry (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) knocked in sophomore Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) with a double to left field. It was the Flying Dutch's only hit of the game against Calvin pitcher Brooke Hunderman.

Calvin utilized a Hope error and one of its four hits of the game to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Carly Dole delivered a walk-off RBI single.

Losing pitcher senior Samantha Vermeesch (Ithaca, Michigan / Ithaca) struck out five Knights in seven innings of work and allowed just four hits on 102 pitches.

Hunderman, who was a back-to-back National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pitcher of the Week in April, struck out 10.

In game two, it was another battle of the defenses.

The first run of the game didn't come until the 10th inning, where both Calvin and Hope scored once.

Freshman Eliana Ruhrup (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) delivered a game-tying RBI with a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 10th that allowed classmate Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) to score from third.

Calvin's Grace Glass knocked in the go-ahead run in the 13th with an RBI single. Hunderman, who pitched the final four innings, kept Hope off the board in the bottom of the inning.

Losing pitcher freshman Hailey Mellec (3-3) went the distance in the circle facing off against 47 batters. Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) allowed seven hits while striking out six.
