Women's Tennis Serves up a 12th Consecutive MIAA Tournament Crown

The NCAA Division III Tournament field will be announced on Monday.

The Hope College women's tennis team left no doubt once again as to who the best team in the MIAA this season.

The 33rd-ranked Flying Dutch recorded a 5-0 victory over Saint Mary's College in the MIAA Tournament final on Saturday at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.

Hope went unbeaten against 10 MIAA opponents this season: two in postseason play and eight during the regular season.

The Flying Dutch claimed their 12th consecutive MIAA Tournament Championship and 13th all time.

Hope (19-5) also secured the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 44-team field will be announced on Monday, May 6.

Coach Austin Hunt expressed his pride to be contributing to such a historical program.

"Quite a few of the players were from my recruiting, so it was cool to see that a ton of girls that I was able to bring in participate and go through [the season] and bring it home," Hunt said.

Freshman power fueled the Flying Dutch.

After Hope swept doubles, freshman Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) put the Flying Dutch within a point of clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fifth singles.

A few minutes later, freshman Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) delivered the final point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fifth singles.

Walker and Wei earned Hope's first point by rolling to an 8-1 victory at third doubles.

Senior and All-MIAA Second Team selection Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) teamed with junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) for an 8-2 victory at second doubles.

Junior and All-MIAA First Team honoree Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) and sophomore and MIAA Most Valuable Player Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) survived three straight breaks of serve and a 2-5 deficit before rallying for an 8-5 victory at first doubles.
