Baseball Drops MIAA Tournament Opener at Adrian

The Flying Dutchmen face Alma College in an elimination game on Friday, May 10. at Kalamazoo.

The Hope College baseball team lost its opening game of the MIAA Tournament, 7-4, at Adrian College on Wednesday.

The third-seeded Flying Dutchmen (20-19 overall) will face fourth-seeded Alma College (24-17) in an elimination game at Kalamazoo College on Friday, May 10, at a time to be announced. Alma lost, 4-1, at Kalamazoo on Wednesday.

Adrian (27-14) plays at Kalamazoo (30-9) on Thursday at 10 a.m. After the Hope-Alma game, there will be a second elimination game between the Hope-Alma winner and the Adrian-Kalamazoo winner at 4 p.m.

The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third against Adrian when senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) slammed a two-run homer to right-center. It was Krizan's third homer of the season.

Adrian evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Davis capitalized on an Al Money fielding error at third base with an RBI triple. Davis then scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs chased starting pitcher Jake Van Dam (Cranford, N.J. / Cranford) six batters into the fourth inning and scored five times during the inning.

Hope mustered only four hits the remainder of the game.

The Flying Dutchmen knocked Adrian starting pitcher Jakob Charles out of the game two batters into the ninth. 

Leftfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) greeted Adrian reliever Luc St. Antoine with an RBI single, but Hope second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) grounded into a double play that scored sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton).

Two batters later, St. Antoine ended the game by inducing Money's groundout back to the mound.
