No. 23 Women's Basketball Tames the Tigers of Colorado College

A commanding third-quarter surge powered the Hope College women's basketball team to a 71-47 victory over Colorado College on Friday evening at Van Noord Arena in the Hope College-Calvin University Tournament.

The 23rd-ranked Flying Dutch used defensive pressure and timely shooting to take full control of the non-conference matchup and tame a new opponent. It was the first meeting against the Tigers, who were picked second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll this season.

Hope (3-0 overall) set the tone early in the first half, recording a 24-18 first-quarter lead and extending it to 37–28 lead by halftime.

The Flying Dutch began the second half with composure, matching Colorado College's early basket before seizing full control. After a layup by the Tigers cut the margin to 37–30 at 9:37, Hope answered immediately.

Sophomore Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic HS) buried a 3-pointer off a kickout from junior Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) at 9:01, pushing the lead back to double digits at 40–30 and setting the tone for the quarter.

Hope forced a turnover on the Tigers' next possession at 8:46, part of a pattern that quickly repeated. Defensive rebounds by Maynard and sophomore Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) stabilized each stop, and Hope's ball pressure led to a string of Colorado College miscues.

With 2:09 remaining, senior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) powered her way inside for a layup that extended the lead to 53–34, then struck again just 31 seconds later with another finish through contact. Vis capped the surge by sinking a free throw at 1:38 to make it 56–37.

Hope closed the period with a steal from junior Chloe Brunsberg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian) at 1:27, helping the Flying Dutch maintain control as they ended the quarter leading 60–37 after outscoring the Tigers 23–9.

Anna Richards scored 14 points to lead Hope. Leah Richards also reached double figures with 10 points and grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Vis finished with eight points.

Kayla Mackel's 14 points topped the Tigers (0-1).

The Flying Dutch are back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan University at Van Noord Arena. Ohio Wesleyan lost to Calvin, 70-45, in Friday's second game.
