Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Alan Babbitt

Nationally-Ranked Women's Basketball Sinks the Scots on Senior Day

Hope honors seniors Olivia Bellows, Jada Garner, Courtney Lee and Brooklyn Robak before the game

The Hope College women's basketball team is headed into the MIAA Tournament on a two-game winning streak after an 80-53 Senior Day victory against Alma College on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The nationally-ranked Flying Dutch led from the opening tip after scoring the game's first nine points on two 3-pointers from senior Olivia Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City HS) and junior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian).

Hope (21-4 overall) finished MIAA play with a 14-2 league record.

The Flying Dutch (No. 18 D3hoops/No. 22 WBCA) will be the No. 2 seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and earned a first-round bye.

Hope will play in the semifinals on Friday, Feb. 28, at 5:30 p.m. at Trine University vs. the winner between third-seeded Calvin University and sixth-seeded Adrian College on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Before the game, the Flying Dutch honored four seniors: Bellows, Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow), Courtney Lee (Fishers, Indiana / Heritage Christian) and Brooklyn Robak (Clarkston, Michigan / Our Lady Of The Lakes).

"I thought our seniors were great today. They've been great all year," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "C-Lee was super strong on the glass. I thought Jada was really good; seven assists is just a huge number. Belly was on fire. I thought Robak was great off the bench, gave us energy."

Bellows scored a game-high 19 points after sinking a season-high five 3-pointers. The elementary education major also grabbed five rebounds.

Garner chipped in 12 points and tied the DeVos Fieldhouse record with seven of Hope's 16 assists. The exercise science major matched Julie Henderson v. Calvin (2-24-06) and Brittany Berry vs. Alma (1-28-15).

Garner did not commit a turnover in 27 minutes on the court.

Vis also finished in double figures with 13 points.

Lee grabbed a team-best seven rebounds to go along with six points.

Defensively, Hope forced 23 Alma turnovers, including 16 with steals. The Scots (10-15, 7-9 MIAA) shot 38% from the field.

"We shot the ball really well in the first half, especially from 3. That caused them to close out further and open some driving lanes," Morehouse said. "I'm happy with how we shared the ball. Any time we're above 12, 13 assists, it means we're playing better basketball. I thought we rebounded on the defensive end a lot better. We gave up only four offensive rebounds; that was a goal for us."
