Liam Danitz and Sara Schermerhorn Qualify to Run after NCAA Division III Indoor Track Championships

The sprinters will race on Saturday, March 15, in Rochester, New York

Hope College sprinters Liam Danitz and Sara Schermerhorn will race for national championships.

The two juniors qualified for the finals in the 200 and 400 meters, respectively, on Friday during the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Nazareth University in Rochester, New York.

Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West HS) will run first on Saturday, March 15, at 4:40 p.m. in the eight-runner women's 400-meter final.

Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) follows in the eight-runner, 200-meter final at 5:15 p.m.

Danitz posted the sixth-fastest qualifying time out of 20 runners after posting a run of 21.62 seconds — just .03 off his school record.

Sam Blaskowski of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse was the top qualifier at 21.32.

This is Danitz's first trip to nationals. The exercise science major is a two-sport athlete who started at defensive end for the MIAA-champion football team.

Schermerhorn qualified eighth in the 400 after recording a run of 56.40 seconds.

Ariella Rogahn-Press of Macalester College (Minnesota) was the fastest at 55.97. 

This is Schermerhorn's third trip to nationals. The exercise science major finished seventh in last season's 400 final at nationals, earning USTFCCCA All-America Second Team accolades.

Schermerhorn placed ninth in qualifying for the 200 with a time of 24.87 seconds, just 0.02 off from making the final and .05 off her school record. 

Schermerhorn earned All-America Second Team honors in the event.
