Softball Tops Cortland after Losing to Springfield

Two big innings from the Hope College softball team overcame a season-high five fielding errors and powered the Flying Dutch to a 9-4 victory against Cortland State (New York) on Monday in Clermont, Florida.

The Flying Dutch bounced back from a 7-4 loss to Springfield College (Massachusetts) earlier in the day and evened their record at 5-5.

Against Cortland, Hope scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and four in the bottom of the sixth. The sixth-inning rally answered two runs from Cortland in the top half of the inning and pulled the Red Dragons within a run.

In the sixth, junior Mya Spisz (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford HS) forced in one run by drawing a bases-loaded walk with nobody out. Freshman Jalen Fossitt (Onondaga, Michigan / Leslie) followed with a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Sidnee Puffpaff (Macomb, Michigan / Dakota) then delivered a two-run double.

In the first, sophomore Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) smacked a go-ahead, two-run triple after Cortland jumped to a 2-0 lead. Stironek scored the rally's fourth run, coming home on sophomore Terin Maynard's RBI single.

The Flying Dutch finished with nine hits.

Winning pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore) went the distance, scattering three hits and one walk over seven innings. The junior struck out five and did not allow an unearned run.

Against Springfield, Hope jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second behind a run-scoring triple from Kerschbaum, RBI single from senior Mady Pahl (Beaverton, Michigan / Beaverton) and a run-scoring single from Maynard.

Springfield (5-2) answered by scoring four times in the third and three times in the fourth.

Stironek added an RBI double in the sixth. Springfield took advantage of three Flying Dutch errors, scoring five unearned runs.

Hope returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 18, with games at 9 a.m. against The College of Wooster (Ohio) and at 11:15 a.m. against Fredonia State University (New York).
