Softball Blanks Eastern Connecticut St., Westminster to Close Florida Trip

The Hope College softball team fired 11 scoreless innings on Friday, closing the annual visit to Central Florida with back-to-back shutouts.

The Flying Dutch blanked Eastern Connecticut State, 9-0, in five innings and Westminster College (Missouri), 8-0, in six innings at Legends Way Field in Clermont, Florida.

Hope evened its overall record at 8-8 heading back north.

Junior Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore HS) allowed only one hit over five innings of work against Eastern Connecticut State (2-7).

The righthander yielded only four baserunners, including two in the top of the first inning on a fielding error and a hit batter. Kaley Laird singled off Kerschbaum (5-3) in the second.

Kerschbaum struck out four and walked one batter.

At the plate, Kerschbaum led off an eight-run second with a triple to right field and scored on an Eastern Connecticut State error during a stolen-base attempt by freshman Abby Whorton (Watervliet, Michigan / Watervliet).

Sophomore Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) laced a two-run triple during the rally and scored on an infield single from freshman Sidnee Puffpaff (Macomb, Michigan / Dakota).

Sophomore Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) delivered a run-scoring triple. The Flying Dutch also received RBIs from freshman Mia Vanderheide (Caledonia, Michigan / Jenison International), junior Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) and senior Mady Pahl (Beaverton, Michigan / Beaverton).

Maynard, who went 3-for-3 in the game, smacked a two-run double in the third.

Against Westminster (3-11), sophomore Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) allowed only three baserunners in six innings: two by walk and one by a third-inning Destiny Rosario single.

The lefthander struck out eight and improved her record to 2-3.

Hope jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Vanderheide RBI single and two-run triple from freshman Mikayla Derks (Saint John, Indiana / Iliana Christian).

Stironek and Derks contributed a run-scoring single and double, respectively, as part of a three-run third.

Junior Mya Spisz (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford) scored an unearned run in the fifth. Kerschbaum had an RBI groundout in the sixth.

Hope returns to action on Tuesday, April 1, at 4 p.m. with a non-league doubleheader at Earlham College (Indiana). The Flying Dutch's home opener vs. Cornerstone University on Tuesday, March 25, has been canceled due to a scheduling conflict.
