Baseball Drops Series Finale to Trine

The Hope College baseball team lost at home, 12-7, to Trine University on Saturday at Boeve Baseball Stadium.

The Thunder won the first MIAA series of the season after the two teams split a doubleheader on Thursday at Trine.

Senior shortstop Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson HS) led the Flying Dutchmen's 10-hit attack by smacking two doubles and totaling 3 RBIs.

Sophomore rightfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) added a team-best three hits, including a two-run single in the seventh that cut Trine's lead to 10-7.

The Thunder (8-12, 2-1 MIAA) started hot with the bats, scoring 10 runs over the first five innings, including a home run and four RBIs from catcher Nathan Gilmet, for a 10-3 lead.

Trine finished with 15 hits against five Flying Dutchmen pitchers.

Hope's comeback effort included steady relief pitching from sophomore Thomas Bacigalupo (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow).

The righthander set a career high with four innings on the mound and tied his career high in strikeouts with five. Bacigalupo gave up just two runs.

On Wednesday, April 2, at 4 p.m., Hope (6-15, 1-2 MIAA) hosts Kalamazoo College in a series opener at Boeve Baseball Stadium.
