Softball Tops Hanover, Edged by No. 22 Wisconsin-Stevens Point to Finish Millikin Invitational

The Hope College softball team finished out the second and final day at the Millikin University Invitational on Saturday with a second split of games.

The Flying Dutch defeated Hanover College, 6-1, then completed the day with a 2-0 loss to No. 22 Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Decatur, Illinois.

Hope (2-2) garnered its first run against Hanover in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Jalen Fossitt (Onondaga, Michigan / Leslie HS) picked up her third RBI of the weekend as she sent junior Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) to cross home plate.

A four-run inning off of three Flying Dutch hits increased the lead to 5-0.

Sophomore Olivia Miller (Hudsonville, Michigan / Unity Christian) delivered an RBI single to center field to the scoring rally before she successfully stole second, which allowed junior Mya Spisz (Oxford, Michigan / Oxford) to score on the throw.

DeMann sent in a run after hitting Hope's fourth triple of the weekend. Sophomore Kenadee Schnick (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) slammed a single through the right side to bring in the Orange and Blue's fifth run.

Winning pitcher sophomore Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) delivered 14 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

DeMann went 2-for-2 and swiped a game-high three stolen bases as well.

Miller slugged two hits for the Flying Dutch, while Schnick picked up two runs-batted-in off of a single hit.

Against Wisconsin-Stevens Point, it took five and a half innings before the scoreless tie was broken. The Pointers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Three Flying Dutch picked up a single hit in defensive battle: DeMann, freshman Abby Whorton (Watervliet, Michigan / Watervliet), and sophomore Eliana Ruhrup (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan).

Junior Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore) went the distance for Hope in the circle, allowing just two hits and recording five strikeouts.

Hope heads south for spring break for 12 games over eight days, first playing twice on Friday, March 14, in Clermont, Florida: at 2 p.m. vs. Gordon College (Massachusetts) and 4:30 p.m. vs. Rowan University (New Jersey).
