Softball Erupts Late to Earn Split at Albion

The Hope College softball team bounced back in a big way to earn a split at Albion College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch dropped the opener, 5-4, on a walk-off win, but erupted for 9-1 victory in five innings in the nightcap.

Hope is now 15-9 on the season and tied for second place in the MIAA with a 3-1 league record.

In Game 2, sophomore Terin Maynard (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison HS) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI against Albion (12-12, 2-2 MIAA).

Maynard smacked an RBI double during a five-run bottom of the fourth.

Sophomore Sophie Stironek (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the third that extended Hope's lead to 4-0.

Winning pitcher Hailey Mellec (Commerce Township, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) rebounded after taking the Game 1 loss in relief by going the distance and firing a three-hitter. The lefthander struck out three while walking one and yielding three hits.

In Game 1, Hope grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Maynard and senior Mady Pahl (Beaverton, Michigan / Beaverton) delivered back-to-back, RBI triples. Pahl scored on an RBI double from junior Gianna Kerschbaum (Baroda, Michigan / Stevensville-Lakeshore).

Albion, however, answered with a four-run sixth.

The Flying Dutch tied the score at 4-4 after Pahl's double knocked in Kerschbaum but left Pahl stranded at third.

Jessie Anstandig drew a leadoff walk for the Britons and moved over to third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice. Megan Maiuri followed with a one-out, walk-off single to left.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday, April 16, at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader at Adrian College.
