Baseball's Late Rally Thwarted by Adrian in Series Opener

The Hope College baseball team made another late rally at Boeve Baseball Stadium, but fell to Adrian College, 7-5, on Thursday in the series opener.

The Flying Dutchmen scored three times in the eighth inning to pull within striking distance for the second consecutive home game, yet could not repeat the magical finish against Albion College on April 18.

Trailing by two runs, Hope put two runners on base to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Adrian reliever Ryan Davis — who moved over from his starting position of third base at the beginning of the inning — retired the final three batters he faced to close out the game.

The fourth save of the season for Davis snapped the Flying Dutchmen's four-game winning streak, dropping them to 12-22 overall and 7-9 in MIAA play. Hope fell 1 ½ games behind idle Kalamazoo College for the fourth and final MIAA Tournament spot with five games remaining.

League-leading Adrian (21-13, 13-3 MIAA) is scheduled to host the Flying Dutchmen for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m.

Adrian took the lead for good after David Kedrow snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth by blasting a three-run homer to center off starter Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview HS).

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth for a 7-2 lead after rightfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.

Adrian starter Jaxon Clark held the Flying Dutchmen to three hits and two runs over seven innings of work. Clark struck out five and walked one.

In the eighth, Hope capitalized on wildness from reliever Lincoln Lipinski and two Adrian errors to score three times with only one hit. Collins smacked a two-out, two-run single to pull the Flying Dutchmen within two runs.
