Baseball Edged by Alma in 10 Innings

Starting pitcher Ian Sanders fired a season-best 5.2 innings and second baseman Elliott Peter slugged his second home run of the season, but the Hope College baseball team lost, 3-2, to Alma College in 10 innings on Friday at Boeve Baseball Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen came within one pitch of securing the victory. A two-out throwing error allowed the tying run for the Scots to reach home plate from second.

Alma then added another unearned run in the top of 10th on Alex Kavalick's RBI single to center and retired three of Hope's four batters to take the series opener.

Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville HS) allowed three hits, three other baserunners and one run while pitching into the sixth.

Sanders left the mound with the Flying Dutchmen leading 2-1.

In the third, freshman left fielder Corbin Bennetts (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) scored an unearned run on a two-out fielding error by the Scots.

In the fourth, Peter slugged a solo homer over the left-field fence.

Neither team scored again until the ninth.

Winning pitcher Ken Fistler tossed two innings of scoreless relief. Freshman reliever Josiah Long was credited with the loss after pitching the 10th.

Hope (6-17, 1-4 MIAA) is scheduled to complete the three-game series on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m. at Alma with a doubleheader.
